Atari is bringing back the classic 1982 game Yars’ Revenge in a reboot called Yars Rising. Developed by WayForward, known for the Shantae franchise, the game is set to release on PC and unspecified consoles later this year.
Yars’ Revenge is a beloved title from Atari, originally released on the Atari 2600. Players control Yar, an insect-like character, as they navigate and defeat enemies. The franchise has seen reboots before, with Yars: Recharged from 2022 being one of the more successful attempts. However, Yars Rising takes a new approach by completely reimagining the series.
The upcoming game is a 2D Metroidvania experience where players embody hacker Emi Kimura on a mission to infiltrate the mysterious Qotech corporation. Story plays a crucial role in Yars Rising, with Atari teasing an “expansive sci-fi mystery” within the game. While the connection to the original game remains unclear, hints suggest Emi might have ties to the alien races from the original game.
The gameplay of Yars Rising will differ significantly from the original Atari classic, focusing on platforming, combat, and stealth in a Metroidvania setting. Fans can also expect retro-inspired minigames, including a homage to the original title. Given WayForward’s expertise in retro side-scrollers, these changes should appeal to fans of the genre.
Yars Rising is scheduled to launch in late 2024 for both PC and consoles.
