The nostalgic trend of translucent tech products seems to be making a comeback, as evident by Xbox’s announcement of the new Sky Cipher Special Edition controller Xbox announced on Wednesday.
Priced at $70 and available for preorder with a release date of August 13, the transparent blue Xbox Wireless Controller showcases its inner workings such as the rumble pack. It boasts metallic D-pad and triggers for enhanced durability, rubber grips on the back for a comfortable hold, and “silver interior parts” that give it a futuristic yet nostalgic look.
Aside from its design, the controller offers up to 40 hours of battery life and features Bluetooth connectivity that allows it to pair with various devices, including PCs and mobile phones.
Xbox has also introduced more sustainable packaging for its controllers, eliminating single-use plastics, reducing box size, and eliminating paper manuals.
In addition to the Sky Cipher controller, Xbox has been releasing a series of special edition controllers, including the Fire Vapor Special Edition announced in May. It seems like new special controllers are being announced by Xbox almost every month.
The transparent trend, popular in the early 2000s, is experiencing a revival in niche products. Examples include Backbone’s Post Malone green translucent controller and Analogue’s transparent version of its Pocket handheld, both of which quickly sold out.
