Elon Musk’s social network X is now allowing Android users to make audio and video calls directly from the app.
The feature release was announced by an X engineer, who stated that it will be available to Android users after they update the app.
In August 2023, CEO Linda Yaccarino discussed the introduction of video calls to the platform, which was later rolled out to iOS users in October.
While any user can receive a call, only paid users can place a call, in line with other features exclusive to paid users on X. However, X recently removed the ability for premium users to set an NFT as a profile picture.
Users can manage calling settings through Settings > Privacy and Safety > Direct Messages > Enable audio and video calling. This menu also allows users to control who can call them, with options including people in their address book, people they follow, and verified users, with the ability to select multiple options.
X continues to pursue its ambition of becoming an “everything app,” with plans for 2024 including launching peer-to-peer payment, new xAI-powered features, and more ad products for marketers.
Recent reports have suggested that advertisers are leaving X and opting to spend money on platforms like LinkedIn, following controversial remarks made by Musk at an event in November 2023.
