X has announced changes to its platform regarding NSFW adult content communities. Community admins can now set an “Adult Content” label in their settings to prevent automatic content filtering. Otherwise, NSFW content will be filtered by default. Communities are smaller groups on X with their own feeds.
This move confirms previous tests of NSFW communities on X and signals a shift towards a more accepting stance on adult content. NSFW content has played a significant role on X, with a large portion of posts including nude and explicit material.
New York Intelligencer recently highlighted the increase in spam bots promoting NSFW content on X. These bots typically have links in their bios leading to adult content.
X has confirmed that NSFW-focused communities can self-designate to avoid automatic content filtering. These changes were shared by Musk, who praised the upgrades to X Communities.
Communities have been highlighted as a key growth strategy for X by Elon Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino. They are working on making Communities more compelling and have seen rapid growth in community engagement.
In addition to the NSFW label for Communities, X will introduce new features like a Ban button, enhanced post sorting options, a Media tab for Android, and more improvements and bug fixes.
The future updates for Communities include tools to explore top posts and communities, promotion on the For You tab, Community Analytics for Mods, and support for audio Spaces. A new user interface for posts and replies is also in the pipeline.
X has not provided an ETA for these upcoming changes.
