Wordy introduces a unique way to learn English through its new iOS app. The app assists users by automatically translating and defining unfamiliar words while they enjoy their favorite movies or TV shows. With a vast library of over 500,000 titles, Wordy includes popular series like HBO’s “The Penguin” and the latest Disney+ show, “Agatha All Along.”
Developed by indie creator Sándor Bogyó, a 23-year-old from Budapest, Wordy was inspired by his struggle with unfamiliar phrases in English while watching shows. His experience with a Chrome extension similar to Wordy called Language Reactor prompted him to create a mobile app for a more convenient experience while watching TV or using a computer.
When a user selects an episode from Wordy’s library, the app analyzes subtitles, lemmatizes words, and utilizes a custom speech recognition model via the phone’s microphone to identify spoken sentences. This allows users to easily follow along, with the app highlighting challenging words for non-native English speakers. An instant translation feature is available for new words encountered.
Wordy offers a summary page for each episode, categorizing words by difficulty levels ranging from Beginner to Proficiency English. Users can save words to their library and practice with digital flashcards later on. Additionally, the app includes a combination of proprietary and third-party AI models to enhance user experience.
During testing, Wordy accurately identified complex vocabulary terms while watching a popular TV show, providing clear translations for better understanding. The app currently supports only English, with plans to integrate Spanish in November, followed by French and German in the near future.
Creator Bogyó emphasized the importance of quality in adding new languages, ensuring accuracy and a seamless user experience. Wordy is available for $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year, with an upcoming Android version set to launch in November.
