With more than 3 billion people worldwide relying on wild-caught and farmed seafood products for their protein intake, the global aquaculture production has recently set a new record, indicating a continuous increase in global consumption of aquatic foods. This trend has led startups in the aquaculture sector to embrace AI technology to enhance production and sustainability.
One such startup, based in Canada, is Wittaya Aqua. Their data-driven platform helps seafood farmers optimize profitability, sustainability, and efficiency by consolidating data points across the seafood supply chain. Wittaya Aqua recently secured $2.8 million in funding to further develop its platform and expand into Asia, the largest aquaculture-producing region in the world.
Co-founder and CEO of Wittaya Aqua, Even Hall, emphasized the importance of Asia in aquaculture production, with countries like China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and South Korea leading the industry. Wittaya Aqua’s platform leverages AI and machine learning to enhance predictive analytics, recommend feed types and quantities, and maximize crop yields based on real-time data and growth projections.
Founded in 2017, Wittaya Aqua was created to address the industry’s fragmented and slow-moving data landscape. By consolidating data from different points in the supply chain, the platform offers transparency and actionable insights to stakeholders, enabling better decision-making at every level.
The startup has already attracted customers like BioMar, De Heus, Uni-President, and US Soybean Export Council, as it enters the revenue-generation stage while projecting significant market growth in the coming years.
In a competitive market, Wittaya Aqua distinguishes itself by combining nutritional information with field performance data, modeling the impact of feed ingredients on animal performance across various species and geographies. The company’s long-term goals include reducing production risks and offering financial stability to farmers through data-driven insights and customized financial products.
With a team spread across Canada and Singapore, Wittaya Aqua is poised to lead the way in transforming the aquaculture industry through technology and innovation.
