In 2021, Windows 11 introduced Android app support through the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). Users could access a wide range of apps from the Amazon Appstore. However, Microsoft has now announced the discontinuation of official Android app support on Windows 11, along with access to the Amazon Appstore.
Effective immediately, Microsoft plans to phase out the WSA by 2025. Users who have already installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps can continue to use them until March 5, 2025. Starting tomorrow, new users will not be able to download the Amazon Appstore from the Microsoft Store.
Amazon stated in a blog post that customers can continue using previously installed Amazon Appstore apps and receive updates post-March 5. However, developers will no longer be able to submit new apps targeting Windows 11 after March 5, 2024.
While the WSA allowed for running Android apps on Windows, its limitations, like the lack of access to the Google Play Store, may have contributed to low usage. Third-party alternatives like Waydroid and BlueStacks still offer options for running Android apps on Windows.
Microsoft remains committed to enhancing the connection between Android and Windows devices, with recent features like using an Android device’s camera as a webcam on Windows 11 and apps such as Link to Windows for call and notification integration.
