Exciting developments are underway for the handheld experience of Windows 11. While devices like the ROG Ally X offer exceptional handheld gaming experiences, the efficiency of Windows has always been a challenge. However, the latest Windows 11 Insider preview (build 22631.4387) introduces a new feature that promises to enhance navigation on handheld devices – a gamepad-friendly keyboard.
Although Windows has had an onscreen keyboard for some time now, using it on a handheld presented a couple of issues. Firstly, it required a manual key binding (Windows + Ctrl + O) to activate, and secondly, controller navigation wasn’t supported. With the latest update, Microsoft addresses the latter problem by enabling controller-based navigation for the onscreen keyboard.
Similar to the Xbox interface, users will now be able to navigate the onscreen keyboard using their controller. Microsoft has also included “button accelerators,” allowing functions like X for Backspace and Y for Space. Additionally, the gamepad-focused keyboard features a vertical alignment for easier navigation, akin to an Xbox layout.

While Microsoft has been gradually enhancing the handheld experience on Windows 11, there’s still room for improvement, especially for couch or handheld users. EmuDeck and similar tools have attempted to provide a more console-like experience, but Windows has yet to match up to SteamOS for controller-bound gamers.
The updated onscreen keyboard marks a significant improvement, eliminating the need for external keyboards or frustrating finger taps on small screens. These changes represent a step in the right direction for Windows 11’s overall handheld experience.
As with most Insider preview builds, the feature updates are being rolled out gradually. If you’re eager to try out the latest features, consider joining the Windows Insider program to stay up to date.
In addition to the onscreen keyboard enhancement, the latest build also allows users to rebind the Copilot key and reveals phone details through the Phone Link app on the Start menu.
