An insightful new report reveals that gamers in India are increasingly willing to invest more in games, showcasing a growing market trend.
Niko Partners has unveiled its latest 2024 India Gamer Behaviour and Market Insights report, offering a comprehensive analysis of player behavior and market dynamics within the country.
While India has been a major contributor to global mobile game downloads, the conversion of these downloads into player spending has historically been lower compared to other regions.
Key Findings
Notable titles like Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India and Garena’s Free Fire have emerged as top-grossing games in India. A survey conducted by Niko Partners revealed that 57% of mobile gamers in India have recently played a battle royale game, with six out of ten mobile game spenders purchasing a battle pass or season pass.
The report also highlighted that 65.4% of respondents are engaged in playing, watching, or participating in tournaments, with esports enthusiasts showing a 12% higher expenditure on games compared to non-competitive gamers.
PC gamers in India reportedly saw a 77.3% increase in spending on PC titles in Q1 compared to the previous year, demonstrating a higher spending level than seen on mobile and console platforms.
Furthermore, the report indicated that female gamers in India spend 8.5% more per month on games compared to their male counterparts.
When it comes to game discovery, 57.2% of Indian gamers find new titles through streamers and influencers, with the ability to play with friends online being a key influencing factor in game selection.
Embracing Spending
Two-thirds of gamers in India cited the ‘fun factor’ as their main motivation for spending money on games, surpassing discounts and friend influence.
“In 2024, Indian gamers are demonstrating a greater willingness to invest in gaming compared to previous years,” noted Niko Partners CEO Lisa Hanson. “Our forecast for a 5-year CAGR of 11.1% in India’s video games industry (reaching $1.4 billion by 2028) is driven by factors such as increased playtime and spending, heightened engagement in esports, growing private sector investment, and government support to nurture the video games and esports ecosystem.”
