BLKFAM is a groundbreaking, ad-supported streaming service focused on the Black community. Launched today, BLKFAM offers over 1,000 hours of new, kid-friendly animation titles, sitcoms, reality shows, fitness and wellness series, news, music content, and more for the whole family to enjoy.
Notably, Whoopi Goldberg is an equity investor in BLKFAM and serves as the creative director. The platform has 10 original series in development, including live-action and animated content set to debut throughout 2024.
Positioning itself as the first and only Black-owned, Black-focused family streaming service, BLKFAM aims to address the lack of representation of Black audiences in mainstream media, despite their significant TV viewership. According to Nielsen, Black audiences consume over 81 hours of media weekly, with 80% using free OTT services, as revealed by Horowitz Research.
BLKFAM’s mission is to showcase entertainment, educational, and celebratory content targeted towards Black American families. Unlike other streaming services, BLKFAM focuses on quality over quantity, curating inclusive stories to engage and spark discussions among its audience. Partnerships with PlayWatch Kids and Candle Media’s ATTN deliver educational shows like “Kembe,” “Gabby Galactic and the Orbiteens,” and “12th Street,” among others.
By emphasizing a co-viewing strategy that caters to the entire family rather than specific age groups, BLKFAM aims to differentiate itself in the market. Founder Larry Adams, former chief brand officer for HBO Max, recognizes the need for wholesome, family-friendly content that Black families can enjoy together, based on his own experiences as a parent.
BLKFAM is accessible on various platforms including Amazon Prime Video Channels, Apple TV, Roku, YouTube TV, Samsung Smart TVs, Vizio, LG, and iOS and Android devices.
