Scout Motors, the Volkswagen Group spinoff, unveiled two cutting-edge electric vehicles on Thursday in the hopes of attracting American customers with a blend of modern design and rugged aesthetics that prioritize mechanical features over digital ones.
In addition to their all-electric versions, Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra Truck will also be available with built-in gas-powered generators using a system called Harvester, paying homage to the brand’s historic ties to the International Harvester Scout from the 1960s.
The release of the Scout EVs is set for 2027, a year later than initially planned. These vehicles are designed to feature a body-on-frame chassis, solid rear axle, front and rear mechanical lockers, and a powertrain capable of delivering 1,000 pound-feet of torque with zero to 60 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds in select trims.
Scout aims to appeal to buyers with a blend of new tech-focused electric vehicles that offer both off-road and on-road performance while evoking nostalgia through tactile buttons and switches alongside a central touchscreen.
Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh, acknowledging the challenges faced by the auto industry, expressed confidence that the new Scout EVs will successfully navigate these obstacles.
Nuts and Bolts
The Scout EV models are projected to offer up to 350 miles of range and will support Tesla’s North American Charging Standard. Extended range variants with over 500 miles of range will also be available, using a gas-powered generator for additional capability.
Scott Keogh emphasized that the Harvester gas-powered generator version maintains the essence of Scout’s identity and functionality while offering extended range capabilities.
Both EVs will feature up to 35-inch tires, ample ground clearance, water fording capacity, mechanical lockers, competitive angles, and robust suspension options to cater to off-road enthusiasts.
The Terra truck will offer towing capacity exceeding 10,000 pounds, while the Traveler SUV can handle up to 7,000 pounds.
Scout’s modern zonal architecture will facilitate over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics, enhancing the user experience and ensuring software reliability.
With pricing starting below $60,000, potentially dropping to $50,000 after incentives, the Scout Traveler and Terra models offer an attractive proposition for customers looking to purchase directly from the manufacturer.
