Google has released its latest July security update for Pixel devices. While the previous month’s Feature Drop introduced new features, such as Gemini Nano on more devices, this current update focuses on addressing a critical security vulnerability. If you own a Google Pixel device from Pixel 5a onwards with Android 14, it is important to update your device promptly to ensure security.
The critical security issue being addressed is CVE-2024-31320, which Google states can allow third-party apps to bypass user prompts under certain conditions. If you have observed this behavior on your Pixel device, it is essential to apply the July security update immediately.
In addition to addressing security concerns, the update also includes fixes for other issues. For instance, a back gesture bug is resolved on any affected Pixel devices, and camera issues experienced by Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users are addressed. Furthermore, the entire Pixel 8 family (Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel 8a) receives a separate fix for system stability.
The July update is currently rolling out to Pixel phones running Android 14. The following devices are expected to receive the update, so if you haven’t received it yet, be patient:
- Pixel 5a 5G
- Pixel 6
- Pixel 6 Pro
- Pixel 6a
- Pixel 7
- Pixel 7 Pro
- Pixel 7a
- Pixel 8
- Pixel 8 Pro
- Pixel 8a
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel Tablet
To check for the update, navigate to Settings > System > Software updates > System update and select Check for system update. Android updates often roll out gradually, so if you don’t see it immediately, try again later. Alternatively, more experienced users can opt for the manual method of flashing the factory image files using Fastboot or the Android Flash Tool.
