Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has expressed no regrets regarding the company’s legal battles with Apple and Google, despite incurring substantial costs.
In a recent media call with PocketGamer.biz, Sweeney mentioned that Epic would have made more money if they had not taken legal action against the tech giants.
In 2020, Epic initiated legal action by implementing its own payment system in Fortnite on mobile, leading to the game’s removal from the app stores and subsequent legal battles worldwide.
Despite facing challenges, Fortnite generated significant revenue through the App Store before its removal.
Epic Games Store Mobile Installs Surpass 10m
Following the introduction of the Digital Markets Act, Epic Games Store is now available to Android and iOS users in the European Union. Sweeney revealed that the store has already surpassed 10 million mobile installs since its launch and aims for 100 million.
In comparison, the PC store has accumulated 300 million downloads since 2018.
Furthermore, Epic has filed a lawsuit against Google and Samsung for collusion over the opt-out Auto Blocker feature on new Samsung devices introduced in a recent update.
Fortnite Profits
Sweeney emphasized the importance of opening up app stores for better competition and opportunities for developers to thrive.
By enabling alternative payment systems and stores, developers could potentially see growth opportunities and higher profits.
Slow Process
Sweeney reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fighting for a more fair and competitive industry, where companies like Epic can stand on equal footing with gatekeepers like Google and Apple.
He stressed the need for faster legislative and regulatory processes to create a better future for developers and consumers alike.
