Threads, the Instagram app similar to Twitter, is introducing live scores for sports games. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that Threads has begun testing live scores for NBA games and plans to add support for additional leagues in the future.
This new feature launch comes as Threads competes with X, a platform that has had live scores for sports games for about a decade. Threads aims to attract users who would typically visit X to discuss live games and stay updated on the latest happenings. In addition to live scores, Threads users can tap a team’s logo to join the conversation about that team and connect with other followers.
Threads mentioned to TechCrunch that this new feature will facilitate users joining discussions about their favorite teams. The company highlighted that basketball has become a popular topic on the platform, with NBA Threads being one of the most active sports communities. The goal of the live scores feature is to establish Threads as the go-to platform for sports discourse.
Users can search for a game on Threads within a day to find its start time, during the game to see the current score, and after the game to check the final score.
The introduction of live scores is Threads’ recent move in its effort to compete with X. Recently, Threads rolled out the “trending now” feature to all U.S. users, aligning with X to help users discover current conversations on the platform.
