From Marvel Rivals to Concord to Fragpunk, there is a surge of new competitive shooters trying to establish themselves in the gaming world. In this competitive landscape, new multiplayer games need to offer something unique to grab attention, whether it’s the inclusion of famous superheroes in Marvel Rivals or the innovative card-based gameplay of Fragpunk. Enter Spectre Divide, the latest release from Mountaintop Studios, presenting a fresh twist on the standard multiplayer first-person shooter experience by allowing players to control and switch between two different characters in-game.
Spectre Divide operates as a 3v3 shooter, where each player has two characters at their disposal. This dynamic allows for strategic maneuvers, as players can swiftly switch between the characters to outsmart their opponents. The “Duality” mechanic in the game adds a layer of complexity that goes beyond mere novelty, as I experienced first-hand in some rounds I played with the developers before the official launch.
Duality in Action
The primary mode in Spectre Divide is Bomb Diffusal, a round-based mode where one team aims to plant and detonate a bomb (referred to as Zeus), while the opposing team strives to eliminate all enemies or defuse the bomb once planted. Players earn currency between rounds, which can be used to purchase weapons, armor, and abilities, akin to games like Counter-Strike or Valorant.
The ability to customize characters and weapons adds a layer of depth, allowing players to tailor their gameplay. The Duality mechanic shines during the buy phase before each round, as players strategically position their main and spectre bodies on the map. The swift interchangeability between the two bodies, along with the spectre movement mechanics, opens up a plethora of tactical possibilities.
Whether it’s baiting opponents, executing feints, or staging surprise attacks, the Duality mechanic paves the way for ingenious strategies. The high-level gameplay potential with proficient mastery of Duality is something I eagerly anticipate witnessing.
Sponsors and Abilities
While Duality sets Spectre Divide apart, the game must also offer a satisfying gameplay experience. And it delivers on that front. The shooting mechanics resemble Valorant, embracing precision aiming through ADS (aim down sights) for enhanced accuracy and accessibility across various playstyles.
Spectre Divide introduces a hero-like element by offering a range of unique abilities through Sponsors. Players can choose from eight Sponsors, each providing distinct abilities. For instance, Bloom Technologies offers the ability to deploy defensive barriers, heal allies, and create tactical smokescreens. These abilities, coupled with the customization options, add depth to the gameplay experience.
Overall, Spectre Divide stands out as a promising addition to the competitive shooter genre. With engaging gameplay mechanics, familiar yet fresh gameplay elements reminiscent of popular titles, and a free-to-play model, it’s a title worth keeping an eye on as it nears its official release for PC.
Spectre Divide is currently in development for PC, with potential controller support post-launch as per Mountaintop Studios.
