According to Mat Piscatella, executive director of games at consumer tracking firm Circana, his analysis of game sales for May 2024 shows a 6% decrease compared to the previous year. However, year-to-date spending is 2% higher, indicating a stagnation in video game sales.
On a positive note for PlayStation, Ghost of Tsushima claimed the top spot on the best-selling games chart in May 2024, surpassing new releases like Homeworld 3 and F1 24 . Other Sony titles in the top 20 include Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
The ongoing success of Helldivers and Ghost of Tsushima on PC indicates that Sony’s PC strategy is effective. Despite releasing in 2020 and receiving expansions, Tsushima continues to attract interest, particularly on PS5.

In contrast, Xbox’s major release in May, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, did not make the top 20 in sales rankings. However, Minecraft maintains its success, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and the Fallout series continue to perform well.
In terms of hardware sales, PlayStation 5 leads, followed by the Switch and Xbox Series X/S. Additionally, Sony’s PlayStation Portal is the highest-selling accessory in both May and for the year 2024.
