Over the years, a coalition of companies has been working to establish Matter, a smart home networking protocol, including Google, Amazon, and Apple known as the Connectivity Standards Alliance. Unlike previous standards like Zigbee and Z-Wave, Matter doesn’t require a proprietary hub and can run locally, making it more robust in the face of interruptions such as power and internet outages.
Despite the challenges, Matter’s supporters continue to push forward as evident by the announcements at CES 2024 in Las Vegas.
LG TVs
During LG’s press conference, it was announced that LG TVs will soon act as Matter controllers, allowing users to manage all their Matter-compatible devices from one place. This support extends to hardware within Google Home as well.
Nanoleaf lights
Nanoleaf unveiled its first dedicated outdoor lights at CES, the Smart Multicolor Outdoor String Lights and Smart Multicolor Permanent Outdoor Lights, both Matter-compatible as part of Nanoleaf’s Matter Essentials line.
Amazon Matter Casting
Amazon introduced support for Matter Casting, the video and audio beaming feature of the Matter smart home standard, on its smart displays and smart TVs. Matter Casting support will also arrive on Fire TVs and other apps later this year.
