While the smartwatch market is saturated with options, there are a few standout contenders that rise above the rest. The Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch have dominated the scene in recent years, but a new player, the Spectra from Pocuter, is poised to challenge their reign.
The Spectra smartwatch, currently in the early stages of its Kickstarter campaign, exudes a retro-futuristic charm reminiscent of classic Bond films. What sets it apart is its user-friendly design that prioritizes repairability, with a thicker aluminum shell that allows for easy access to all components.
What’s truly impressive about the Spectra is its emphasis on the right-to-repair movement. With just seven screws holding it together, repairs are a breeze compared to the complexity of other smartwatches like the Apple Watch.
Despite its focus on repairability, the Spectra doesn’t skimp on performance. Boasting features like a 368 x 448 OLED display, onboard speaker and microphone, and a side crown for easy adjustments, it holds its own against high-end smartwatches.
With 8MB of RAM, 32MB of executable flash memory, and a microSD card slot for expandable memory up to 512GB, the Spectra offers impressive storage capabilities. However, it currently does not support the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store, as it runs on SpectraOS, which is still in development.
While the Spectra shows promise, there are still some development milestones to achieve. The Android and iOS apps, SDK, and app store are works in progress, with completion percentages varying. Despite the risks associated with crowdfunding, the Spectra presents an exciting opportunity to champion right-to-repair principles on a larger scale.
If you’re intrigued by the Spectra, you can back the project on Kickstarter at the early bird price of 199 euros ($217).
