During Gamescom 2024, Striking Distance Studios unveiled its latest project, a roguelike dungeon crawler set in the universe of the action horror game The Callisto Protocol.
Redacted, stylized as [REDACTED], is scheduled for release on October 31 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The game follows a security guard attempting to escape Black Iron Prison, the same setting as the previous game, utilizing a roguelike gameplay loop where each death leads to a new attempt to reach the escape pod, collecting weapons, suits, skills, and experiments along the way.
In a unique twist, players will not only face mutated inmates and alien monsters but also other individuals trying to reach the escape pod, including blue-collar workers like a lunch lady and a custodian. Another challenging aspect is facing your own corpse, equipped with your collected gear and upgrades, upon each death.
Redacted, which appears to be the actual title, boasts a distinct art style compared to The Callisto Protocol, featuring a bright, colorful aesthetic with a comic book-inspired look and fast-paced gameplay.
The first game from Striking Distance Studios, The Callisto Protocol, aimed to be a spiritual successor to Dead Space, led by Glen Schofield. While it shipped in December 2022, Schofield’s departure from the studio hinted at development challenges. The team, however, has been actively working on another AAA project in addition to Redacted.
