MediaTek is ushering in a new era of flagship Android phones and tablets with the introduction of its latest silicon. The Dimensity 9400 chip, set to debut in Android devices in the final quarter of 2024, promises significant advancements across the board.
One of the key upgrades in the Dimensity 9400 is the shift to TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process node, surpassing its 4nm-based predecessor in terms of performance and efficiency.
This shift enables the Dimensity 9400 to achieve a 40% increase in energy efficiency, along with a 35% improvement in single-core CPU output and a 28% boost in multicore performance.
The chip features an all-big-core design, with a prime Arm Cortex-X925 core running at up to 3.62GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores at 3.3GHz, and four Arm Cortex-A720 cores reaching a peak speed of 2.4GHz.
Notably, the graphics department has seen significant enhancements with the new 12-core Immortalis G925 GPU delivering 41% more raw performance and improving ray tracing by 40%. The new GPU is also 44% more power-efficient.
In addition, MediaTek has upgraded the memory interface to the LPDD5X standard, delivering a 25% improvement in performance and power efficiency. The Imaqiq 1090 ISP supports 8K video capture at 60 fps and HDR across the zoom pipeline.
The imaging engine also introduces AI-assisted super zoom and reduces power consumption by 14% for 4K 60 fps video recording. Furthermore, MediaTek’s new silicon supports AI-backed audio focusing with signal capture from up to six mics.
With AI being a central focus, MediaTek’s 8th generation NPU introduces Agentic AI support, delivering a 2X increase in diffusion performance and an 80% improvement in processing large language models. The Dimensity 9400 is claimed to be the first mobile chip capable of on-device video generation and LoRA training.
Despite consuming 35% less power, the AI engine in the Dimensity 9400 offers significant performance improvements, including on-device video generation capabilities. MediaTek’s advancements in AI technology set a new standard in mobile processing power.
