In 2024, I had the opportunity to test out several folding phones after not using many in the previous year. Among the devices I tried were the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, OnePlus Open, Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and a standout performer – the Honor Magic V3.
Unmatched Design and Form Factor
The Honor Magic V3 sets itself apart with its slim profile, measuring just 9.2mm thick when folded – thinner than its competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, OnePlus Open, and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This thinness, coupled with its lightweight build, makes the Magic V3 feel more like a traditional smartphone than a folding device.
- The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is 12.1mm thick
- The OnePlus Open is 11.7mm thick
- The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is 10.5mm thick
Despite its slim profile, the Magic V3 houses impressive hardware including a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage ensuring smooth performance for all tasks.
Moreover, the Magic V3 boasts exceptional camera capabilities with a 50MP primary camera, a 50MP periscope telephoto camera, and a 40MP ultrawide camera. While not the most impressive setup on paper, the device delivers outstanding photographic results.
Issues with Software
However, the Magic V3 does suffer from software issues. Honor’s MagicOS interface has quirks like inconsistent haptics and a lack of standard Android features. A concerning bug that wiped all data from the device was also experienced, highlighting the software’s need for improvement.
The Future of Foldable Hardware
Despite its software shortcomings, the Honor Magic V3 represents a significant leap in foldable technology. Its sleek design, powerful hardware, and impressive camera capabilities make it a standout device in the foldable market. While not available in the U.S., it serves as a benchmark for the industry, encouraging competitors to raise the bar with future foldable releases.
