Qualcomm is paving the way for on-device AI implementation in next-gen smartphones, offering over 75 AI models optimised for its platforms and Snapdragon at Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona. One of the highlights is the new Qualcomm AI Hub, along with the introduction of the FastConnect 7900 mobile connectivity system, the first to feature Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, ultra-wideband, and AI-optimised performance all in one chip.
Among the groundbreaking tools making their way to Android for the first time is the multimodal model Large Language and Vision Assistant (LLaVA), enabling multi-turn conversations with AI using data inputs like text and images. This innovation enhances privacy and personalisation on devices. Additionally, the Low Rank Adaptation (LoRA) showcased at MWC Barcelona demonstrates the efficiency and scalability of generative AI, allowing Android users to create high-quality images.
This push for AI integration is part of a larger trend, with hardware makers globally focusing on on-device AI capabilities. Rumors suggest that the upcoming Apple iPhone 16 will also incorporate on-device AI assistance, along with significant improvements to Siri.
Empowering Devices
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform is at the forefront of enabling commercial AI capabilities in flagship smartphones like the HONOR Magic6 Pro, OPPO X7 Ultra, and Xiaomi 14 Pro. These devices leverage AI in various ways, such as AI image expansion on Xiaomi and AI-based calendars and video creation on HONOR.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is not just about AI; it is also marketed as a gaming powerhouse, dubbed the “ultimate portable gaming console.” Its AI engine can upscale games to 8K resolution without compromising performance or battery life.
"The future of generative AI is hybrid," remarked Qualcomm Incorporated president and CEO Cristiano Amon. "Connectivity plays a crucial role in scaling generative AI across the cloud, edge, and device, while AI solutions enable us to deliver next-gen connectivity to support this era of generative AI."
Qualcomm Technologies senior vice president and general manager of technology planning and edge solutions, Durga Malladi, emphasized the importance of the Qualcomm AI Hub in empowering developers to harness cutting-edge AI technologies and create engaging AI-enabled applications.
In 2021, the Snapdragon Pro Series collaborated with Activision to bring Call of Duty: Mobile to Mobile Masters, showcasing the potential of Qualcomm’s AI-driven solutions.
