In spite of initial skepticism over Telly, a 55-inch LCD TV that is being given away for “free,” we have come to realize its unique features. Telly isn’t a regular 55-inch television as it comes with a built-in soundbar, webcam, far-field microphone array, and a 10-inch-tall “Smart Screen” that displays advertising.
The term “free” comes with the understanding that you don’t pay in cash, but rather with your attention. To obtain one, you will need to sign up for one on Telly’s website.
After emerging from a two-year stealth mode, Telly aimed to have a half-million units in homes by the end of the year. However, only “thousands” have been shipped. Out of those, only four units have been returned, which was due to the abnormally shaped TV not fitting in the home.
At CES 2024, I had the opportunity to see Telly in action. While still skeptical, I understand the trade-off. Users receive a “free” TV in exchange for viewing ads and providing Telly with data on viewing habits.
Stepping into the living room of the Aria suite, I recognized the unique features of Telly. It looks normal enough in person, and it’s clear that it was not just a pie-in-the-sky idea, but a well-thought-out hardware and software-based product.
That’s a lot. And it’s put together really well, even in this relatively early beta-testing form. A good television. A good soundbar. An intriguing secondary Smart Display that, yes, shows advertising, but also allow for a number of other uses.
All for free.
