Bethesda has officially launched the new mobile-exclusive empire-building game, The Elder Scrolls: Castles, worldwide on both the App Store and Google Play.
Touted as the “spiritual successor” to Fallout Shelter, this game allows players, both veterans of the series and newbies, to take charge of their own castle.
Choosing simulation gameplay over the main series’ action RPG style has not hindered the success of Castles, as the game quickly rose to the top of Google Play’s simulation chart upon release.

In late 2023, The Elder Scrolls: Castles was first made available to Android users in early access and has since been in soft launch in the Philippines throughout most of 2024. The game has gradually expanded to countries like Sweden, New Zealand, and Indonesia since January.
During its soft launch phase, which has now concluded, the game generated $170,000 in gross revenue. Germany, Canada, and Australia were the top markets for early success, as reported by AppMagic data.
While not the first Elder Scrolls mobile game (that honor belongs to 2003’s Stormhold), Castles is set to carve its own niche in the franchise as a simulation game tailored for modern mobile gaming. Bethesda has designed the game so that one in-game year corresponds to each real-life day, encouraging players to return daily to witness their kingdom’s growth.
Within the game, characters can support or betray their kingdom, generate resources, start families, and even get involved in diplomatic disputes with neighboring kingdoms. Players can also expect to receive a free Legendary Subject, Ulfric Stormcloak, as a reward for reaching two million pre-registrations. However, unlocking this character will require reaching level 25 by October 10th, providing an additional incentive for players to engage with the game over the upcoming month.
