Disney+ has introduced four live-action Star Wars series since its launch in 2019, such as The Mandalorian and Andor. However, The Acolyte stands out by focusing on Mae (Amandla Stenberg), a former Jedi Padawan who harbors resentment towards her previous mentors. The first trailer for The Acolyte shows Mae attacking and seemingly killing Jedi with knives.
The trailer features Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae as Jedi Master Sol, the instructor at the Jedi Temple where a young Mae has prophetic visions involving fire. Another character, Mother Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith), hints that Mae’s actions are driven by a thirst for power rather than moral alignment.
Making her Star Wars debut, The Matrix‘s Carrie-Anne Moss portrays Jedi Master Indara, who effortlessly deflects Mae’s knife assaults. Despite this, Mae’s trail of destruction implies that not every Jedi has been as fortunate.
Covered in makeup, Dafne Keen portrays Jecki, a young Jedi facing a menacing threat signaled by a red lightsaber, possibly wielded by a Sith member. The mystery of Mae’s allegiance remains unresolved.
The Acolyte is set to premiere on Disney+ with two episodes on June 4.
