Balatro, the roguelike poker indie game that captured the attention of many players earlier this year, has exciting news. Developer LocalThunk has announced a major free update coming next year.
This update will introduce “new ideas and strategies” to the game and will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, and Switch. This is just the first of three planned announcements from publisher Playstack and LocalThunk, with more details to be revealed at undisclosed times.
Since its release in February, Balatro has sold over 2 million units, marking a significant milestone for an indie deckbuilder. Its success can be attributed to its engaging gameplay loop that combines poker with strategic card mechanics. Players must employ the right tactics to unlock cards and employ the best strategies to win.
LocalThunk expressed gratitude to the players for their support, stating, “I would never have thought that Balatro would be played by over 2 million people when I started working on it almost 3 years ago.”
Despite similarities to poker, Balatro is not associated with gambling and has faced issues with certain platforms due to this misunderstanding. LocalThunk has made it clear that the game will never be used for gambling purposes.
