Undead Labs announced on Wednesday that they will be concluding support for the 2018 game State of Decay 2 later this year in order to focus on State of Decay 3.
A post on their website states that Update 38 will be the final content update for the zombie survival game. The update will address long-standing issues, introduce quality-of-life changes, and offer seasonal content that will be permanently available in the game world after the update is released.
The developers clarify that State of Decay 2 will not be taken offline and will remain accessible through Xbox Game Pass. Players will still have access to all released content, modes, and improvements, with bounties continuing to cycle automatically.
The intention is not to shut down the game but to ensure it remains available while the team shifts its focus to State of Decay 3.
“While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, we are also working on the next evolution of the franchise! Our goal is to create the ultimate zombie survival simulator in the franchise, and to achieve that, we will be concentrating our efforts on developing the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3,” the post states. “Thank you for your continued support and for being the best gaming community there is. We are excited to dedicate ourselves to making the next game even better.”
State of Decay 3 was announced in 2020, with limited information revealed until this year, when a three-minute cinematic trailer debuted during the Xbox Games Showcase. However, the trailer mostly reiterates the essence of State of Decay without divulging specific changes or a potential release timeframe. The developers have promised to share an update “at a later time.”
