Gamescom, the largest gaming event in Europe, has returned once more. Geoff Keighley, known for organizing the Summer Game Fest Kickoff and The Game Awards, put together another livestream filled with exciting reveals for the Gamescom Opening Night Live. Serving as the final major gaming showcase of the summer, developers used this event to showcase games set to be released throughout the latter half of 2022 and early 2023.
Thanks to leaks and teasers from Geoff Keighley, much of the lineup for Gamescom Opening Night Live was already known. The event featured new footage from highly anticipated upcoming titles such as The Callisto Protocol, Hogwarts Legacy, High On Life, Gotham Knights, and more. Additionally, official announcements were made for the new version of Dead Island 2 and the release date for Sonic Frontiers. Dune Awakening was announced by Funcom
The second reveal of the evening was Dune Awakening, an ambitious open-world survival MMO set in the universe of the popular sci-fi franchise. Players will navigate the harsh environment of Arrakis, building bases, gathering resources, and defending against enemy factions. Although a release date has not been announced, Funcom plans to hold a beta for Dune Awakening prior to its launch.
Lords of the Fallen 2 emerges as The Lords of the Fallen
This year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live brought good news for a game that has been in development limbo. The Lords of the Fallen, a follow-up to the 2014 Soulslike, has been announced to be actively in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The new trailer, narrated by Joseph Quinn of Stranger Things, reintroduced players to the series’ world and gave confirmation of its progress.
New Tales from the Borderlands set to release soon
2K and Gearbox unveiled New Tales from the Borderlands, scheduled to launch in less than two months. This narrative adventure set in the Borderlands universe will introduce players to a fresh cast of characters, allowing them to make choices that impact the story. With the signature humor and style of the Borderlands series, fans won’t have to wait long to dive into the action. New Tales from the Borderlands is set to release on multiple platforms on October 21.
Sonic Frontiers confirmed for release this year
Despite initial doubts from some fans, Sonic Frontiers is on schedule to launch this year. A new trailer showcased the game and confirmed the leaked release date of November 8, placing it in competition with other major titles. Sonic Frontiers will be available on various platforms on launch day.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space to receive multiplayer game
The Director of Friday the 13th: The Game announced a new multiplayer horror game based on the cult classic film Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Slated for release in early 2023, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game will be available on select platforms, allowing players to sign up for a beta on the game’s website.
Former Bethesda and Obsidian developers launch new studio and game
Former developers from Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment came together to form Something Wicked Games, unveiling their new studio and project, Wyrdsong. Set in medieval Portugal, Wyrdsong is an occult RPG with a spooky reveal trailer, promising an intriguing experience. More details about Wyrdsong were revealed in an interview with Digital Trends.
Dead Island 2 scheduled for launch in February 2023
Following a leak that had circulated, Dead Island 2 was officially showcased for the first time in years, presenting a reimagined version of the game. Players will take on the role of Slayers fighting zombies in Los Angeles with customizable abilities and intense combat. After several years of anticipation, Dead Island 2 is set to be released in early 2023 for various platforms.
