Jedi are entertaining, but a fresh Star Wars game that strays from the typical Force powers and lightsabers theme is a refreshing change.
Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft’s upcoming game featuring scoundrel Kay Vess, offers a unique perspective with its focus on a Han Solo-type character navigating the galaxy’s darker elements armed with a blaster. Set to release on August 30 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, I had the opportunity to play nearly five hours of the open-world experience at a recent preview event.
For those expecting the typical Ubisoft open-world game formula, Outlaws presents a different experience. Departing from the usual “find the towers and fill your map with quest icons” loop of Far Cry-style games, Outlaws offers a refreshing take on the open-world genre.
Sneak attacks
Outlaws is not just a shooter; my preview experience primarily focused on stealth gameplay. The missions required me to infiltrate and navigate through secretive hideouts, emphasizing the need for stealthy approaches to avoid detection by enemies.
Utilizing tools like Nix, a companion creature that aids in distracting enemies and completing tasks, adds depth to the stealth mechanics. While there are moments of intense blaster combat, my initial impression categorizes Outlaws more as a stealth game than a typical third-person shooter.
Into the stars
Outlaws also incorporates spaceship combat, offering a diverse range of gameplay experiences. Navigating through space and engaging in battles while piloting Kay’s ship, the Trailblazer, adds a dynamic element to the gameplay.
Planet-side
The game’s setting on the Moon of Toshara, a unique location within the Star Wars universe, captures the essence of classic Star Wars while introducing new elements inspired by savannah biomes. The diverse landscape of Toshara, featuring open plains and a bustling metropolitan hub, sets the stage for intriguing story missions and faction interactions.
Deal me in
Outside of main missions, players can engage in various activities such as playing Sabacc, an in-universe card game, and participating in Star Wars-themed horse races. These side activities offer a break from the main storyline and provide opportunities for exploration and earning rewards.
Entering a larger world
Exploring the open areas of the game allows players to experience different gameplay mechanics, such as riding speeder bikes and interacting with various experts to acquire new abilities. This unique progression system adds depth to the gameplay experience, offering a refreshing change from traditional skill trees.
Smuggler’s fun
Overall, Outlaws presents a dense gaming experience with promising elements across various aspects of gameplay. While the stealth mechanics felt solid, the game’s expansive scope covering shooting, faction interactions, and open-world activities hints at a captivating experience awaiting players.
