Recent overseas licence approvals in China point towards the development of a mobile game inspired by Final Fantasy XIV by Square Enix and Tencent.
The approval, along with 14 other games, was highlighted by Niko Partners, including titles such as Second Dinner’s Marvel Snap, Nintendo’s Paper Mario: The Origami King, and a mobile and PC version of a Rainbow Six game managed by Tencent.
Bringing the world of Final Fantasy XIV to mobile platforms
Originally released in 2013, Final Fantasy XIV is a popular MMORPG that continues to have an active player base. Developed and published by Square Enix as a more successful replacement for the initial 2010 version, the game has seen several updates and expansions over the years, being available on various consoles and PC. However, a mobile version has never been released until now.
The approval for a mobile game specific to Final Fantasy XIV indicates a new chapter for the game, possibly introducing it to a wider audience through mobile platforms, while retaining the essence of the massively multiplayer experience.
Following their strategic partnership in 2018, Square Enix and Tencent announced the development of several projects. The reported mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV seems to be one of these projects, with the approval in China suggesting a commitment to its release, unlike the cancelled NieR game they had worked on previously.
While details about the new Final Fantasy title are scarce and there has been no official announcement from Square Enix or Tencent, the approval in China reflects the ongoing trend of overseas game licences. 2023 saw a resurgence with 98 approvals, and the numbers for 2024 are yet to be determined.
