Wizards of the Coast and Resolution Games have teamed up to bring Dungeons & Dragons to virtual reality. This collaboration aims to capitalize on the increasing popularity of the decades-old tabletop role-playing game, which has been boosted by third-party content creators like Critical Role and Dimension 20. The franchise has also seen success with a Hollywood film and the video game Baldur’s Gate 3.
Resolution is known for its game Demeo, which digitally recreates the tabletop gaming experience for VR headsets like Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro, as well as for devices like the iPad.
While the details of the collaboration are still murky, it’s evident that Wizards is continuing its push to bring Dungeons & Dragons into the digital realm. The partnership may result in a virtual tabletop experience for players to connect with their friends and play D&D through VR, or it could lead to a new immersive storytelling experience.
Amidst the growing success of Wizards in the digital gaming space, its parent company Hasbro has experienced layoffs. Despite the overall revenue decline for Hasbro, the division that runs Wizards and digital gaming has reported a 40% increase in revenue year over year, with a $203.4 million operating profit.
