Sony recently announced layoffs affecting around 900 employees in its PlayStation division, representing 8% of the global workforce. The company is also closing its London Studio in the U.K.
PlayStation chief Jim Ryan stated, “After careful consideration and discussions, changes are necessary to ensure the growth of the business and the company’s development for the future. We are focused on delivering the best experiences for our community while ensuring long-term sustainability.”
In a separate post, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst revealed that studios like Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and Firesprite will be affected by the cuts, impacting employees across different regions.
These layoffs follow Sony’s recent sales forecast adjustment for the PlayStation 5 due to decreasing demand, with projections revised from 25 million to 21 million units for the fiscal year.
Sony joins other gaming companies like Microsoft, Unity, and various tech giants in announcing recent job cuts, reflecting a trend in the industry towards workforce reductions.
