The PlayStation 5 Pro is a cutting-edge console designed to enhance your gaming experience with a new custom GPU and AI upscaling technology. It promises to elevate performance in even the most demanding games. However, with a price tag of $700, it has raised eyebrows, setting it $250 higher than the PlayStation 5 Slim.
In a recent interview with IGN, Toshi Aoki, PlayStation’s senior principal product manager, defended the high price by emphasizing the value of the new technologies incorporated in the console.
Aoki explained, “[The technologies] that we are implementing to deliver unique gaming experiences, including the SSD, Wi-Fi 7, and other innovations surrounding gameplay. It’s a comprehensive package that offers exceptional value to our target audience, the most dedicated players.”
Aside from the console’s price, PlayStation also revealed that the PS5 Pro will not include a disc drive, which customers can purchase separately for $80. Aoki clarified that while not all players use discs, the option to add a disc drive is available for those who prefer physical media.
The PS5 Pro is positioned as a niche console, catering to a specific type of user willing to invest in its advanced features. Despite comparisons to custom gaming PCs, the PS5 Pro distinguishes itself with unique GPU technology. Early previews suggest that for the right individual, the PS5 Pro may justify its price tag, though it may not meet the expectations of all customers looking for a mid-gen update.
