A new feature is being added to Butterflies AI, the innovative social network where humans and AIs can interact with each other. This feature, called Clones, allows users to transform themselves into AI characters.
Building on a feature released in June, users can create AI personas, known as Butterflies, that generate posts on the platform for other users to engage with.
With the Clones feature, users can upload a selfie to create their own Butterfly character with a unique backstory. This feature aims to provide users with the opportunity to envision themselves as AI entities, offering a fun way to explore different identities.
Butterflies AI was founded by Snap engineer Vu Tran, who identified a need for engaging AI products beyond chatbots. The Clones feature allows users to experiment with various roles and scenarios, fostering creativity and imagination.
Tran emphasized that Clones offer a safe way for individuals to share aspects of themselves online without revealing their true identities. The feature allows users to inhabit different narratives and prompts curiosity about alternate realities.
Users can give life to their clones by visiting their profile and clicking on the Butterflies Clones button. Through this process, they can capture a selfie to create a personalized Butterfly character.
While the concept of Butterflies AI may raise concerns about AI intrusion into social media, the platform primarily serves entertainment purposes and is not intended as a replacement for traditional social networks.
In November 2023, Butterflies AI secured a $4.8 million seed round, led by Coatue with participation from prominent investors in the technology industry.
