Sega Europe is undergoing significant restructuring, resulting in the layoff of approximately 240 developers and the spinoff of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment as an independent company.
Relic Entertainment, known for strategy games like Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III and Company of Heroes 3, is buying itself back from Sega with the assistance of investment company Emona Capital, transitioning to an independent company for an undisclosed amount. Relic announced their independence on X (formerly Twitter).
Sega Europe’s restructuring also impacted other companies, with about 240 roles being cut across several bases in the region. This includes studios like Creative Assembly and Sega Hardlight, as confirmed by Sega and reported by IGN.
In a statement, Sega Europe Managing Director Jurgen Post expressed regret over the layoffs, emphasizing the necessity of change to ensure the future of their games business. These layoffs did not affect Sega employees in the United States or Japan, where Sega of America recently successfully unionized.
