Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Ring this year, marking its entry into the smart ring market dominated by smaller companies like Oura. This compact wearable tracks health metrics and provides users with an Energy Score and Sleep Score using AI algorithms.
The Galaxy Ring is compatible with any Android phone with Samsung Health, but unfortunately, it does not support iOS, which is a missed opportunity in my opinion.
Smart rings should be for everyone
I use an iPhone and have experience with various smart rings that support both iOS and Android. The lack of iOS compatibility for the Galaxy Ring raises questions about Samsung’s decision-making.
A swing and a miss
By limiting the Galaxy Ring to Android users, Samsung is missing out on potential customers who use iPhones. The lack of cross-platform compatibility hinders the appeal of the Galaxy Ring for many users.
It’s puzzling why Samsung hasn’t developed a Samsung Health app for iOS, considering other wearables like Fitbit being compatible with both platforms. This closed approach limits consumers’ choices and could impact Samsung’s reach.
Allowing iPhone users to experience the Galaxy Ring could have opened doors for them to explore Samsung’s other products in the future. The exclusivity to Android seems counterproductive in today’s diverse tech ecosystem.
In contrast, if Apple were to create an Apple Ring, it’s unlikely to cater to Android users, reinforcing the closed nature of tech ecosystems.
Overall, closed ecosystems restrict user choice and hinder the potential for innovation in the tech industry.
