The Rivian R1T electric pickup truck has been a highly popular first release from the new automaker, as are its SUV counterpart, the R1S, which are both considered to be among the best in their class. However, they are relatively expensive, with the entry-level R1 starting at $73,000, making them out of reach for many potential buyers. In response, Rivian has been developing its next-gen, more affordable platform, the Rivian R2, to reach a wider audience.
If Rivian continues with its current naming convention, it may release multiple R2 models, such as an R2S SUV and R2T truck, at lower price points than its current vehicles. Currently, there are rumors of an R2 compact SUV, which is the focus of this discussion.
Interested in owning a Rivian SUV at a lower price? Here’s everything we know about the Rivian R2 so far.
Rivian R2 design
Details about the Rivian R2 compact SUV are limited, but it is expected to be smaller than the R1S, potentially verging on more of a crossover size than a true SUV. The company has indicated that the R2 will maintain the same adventure aesthetic found in the R1S and feature the iconic oval headlights. However, the remaining design elements have yet to be revealed.
Rivian R2 price
The most appealing aspect of the Rivian R2 will be its price point. Aimed at being more affordable than the R1S and R1T, Rivian has mentioned a price range for the R2 of $40,000 to $60,000, making it a very appealing option for budget-conscious buyers who appreciate Rivian’s approach.
Rivian R2 release date
According to a minutes sheet from the Laguna Beach city council, Rivian is looking to hold an “R2 Launch” event in March 2024, with sales scheduled to begin in 2026. This aligns with Rivian’s previous announcement of launching the R2 in “early 2024.” However, with a few years before its release, the EV market is expected to be much more competitive by the time the Rivian R2 hits the roads.
Rivian R2 colors and models
Rivian has not yet announced the models and color options for the R2, but it is anticipated that it will offer similar trim levels as its R1 models.
Rivian R2 charging speed and range
Details about the charging speed and range for the R2 are still unknown, as it will be based on an all-new platform. However, it is hoped that the R2 will offer a range of at least 300 miles and be compatible with similar charging speeds as the R1S and R1T.
Rivian R2 performance
While there is no information available on the performance of the Rivian R2, it is expected to be available in single-motor or dual-motor configurations, similar to its older siblings, allowing for an all-wheel drive model.
Rivian R2 tech features
Rivian’s high-tech approach is expected to carry over to the R2, with features such as onboard Wi-Fi, wireless charging pads, and Alexa integration likely to be included. Additionally, helpful driving tools such as automated emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, and adaptive cruise control are anticipated to be standard on the R2.
Rivian R2 tax credit status
As the Rivian R2 is still a few years away, it remains uncertain if it will qualify for the federal EV tax credit. However, if current laws remain in place, it could potentially qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit, given that it will likely be manufactured in the U.S.
Our Rivian R2 wish list
Our hope is that the Rivian R2 will offer at least 300 miles of range, including in the base model. Additionally, we hope it will be compatible with ultra-fast 350kW chargers. We also anticipate a similar design sensibility and tech feature set as the R1, which has made Rivian a compelling option.
