In the realm of electric vehicles, electric crossovers have been prevalent for a number of years, but now we are seeing a rise in electric SUVs as well. Some of these electric SUVs are already on their second generation, like the Rivian R1S. This year, Rivian unveiled an update to the R1S, which has long been considered a top choice for those seeking a three-row electric SUV. However, it faces stiff competition from the Kia EV9, which is praised for being a more affordable option that still delivers a fantastic overall experience.
So, how does the second-generation Rivian R1S compare to the Kia EV9? While they are priced differently, is the R1S worth the extra investment? Here’s what you need to know.
Design
Both the second-generation Rivian R1S and the Kia EV9 are three-row SUVs, so naturally, there are similarities in their design. They both have a sizable presence and exhibit typical SUV aesthetics.
However, there are distinct differences between the two as well. Rivian is known for its signature design elements such as the oval headlights at the front and the light bars on both ends of the vehicle. The second-generation R1S retains this design language, which has been well received. It exudes a friendly and modern vibe that resonates with R1S owners.
The Kia EV9, on the other hand, boasts the striking “Digital Tiger Face” at the front, characterized by angular headlights and a bold style. While not as cutting-edge as the R1S, the EV9 still sports a unique and appealing design.
Both SUVs have their own charm in terms of design. The EV9 leans towards a more aggressive styling, whereas the Rivian exudes a fresh and modern appeal with a touch of approachability. Design preferences ultimately come down to personal taste.

Interior and Tech
On the interior front, both vehicles excel. The EV9 boasts a modern and tech-savvy interior, featuring dual screens for instrument monitoring and infotainment. It provides a comfortable cabin with options for six or seven seats, catering to larger families. The EV9’s interior, while slightly more traditional than the R1S, is still contemporary and packed with features like Apple CarPlay support.
Conversely, the R1S leans more towards a tech-centric approach. It also incorporates dual screens for instrument monitoring and infotainment. Although lacking CarPlay support, Rivian’s software has garnered acclaim for its responsiveness and user-friendly interface, powered by Unreal Engine for stunning visuals. Having experienced both vehicles, while relying on CarPlay in the EV9, I found Rivian’s software to be quite impressive, making up for the absence of CarPlay. The R1S accommodates seven seats.
While the EV9 appeals more to mainstream users, the R1S offers a more intuitive and modern interior styling. While personal preference plays a role here, the modern aesthetic gives Rivian the edge in this category.

Performance
When it comes to performance, the two vehicles share some similarities, but one outperforms the other.
The Kia EV9 is available in five different variants. The EV9 Light stands as the entry-level model, offering standard and long-range versions, both being rear-wheel drive. The standard variant delivers 215 horsepower, with the long-range variant stepping up to 240hp. Moving up the lineup, the EV9 Wind, an all-wheel drive model, features a dual-motor setup producing 379hp and 516 pound-feet of torque. The pinnacle is the EV9 GT Line, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds.
On the other hand, the Rivian R1S offers a performance boost in its second generation. Available in multiple variants, all equipped with all-wheel drive, the entry-level R1S Adventure Dual Standard churns out 533hp, matching the 0-60mph time of the EV9 GT Line. The R1S lineup includes models like the R1S Adventure Dual Large and Dual Max, offering 533hp or up to 665hp with the optional performance upgrade. The R1S Ascend Tri Max boasts a staggering 850 horsepower and sprints to 60mph in 2.9 seconds through its tri-motor configuration. Lastly, the upcoming R1S Ascend Quad Max, with four motors producing 1025hp, accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 60mph in a mere 2.6 seconds, impressive for a large SUV.
Despite the higher price tag of the R1S compared to the EV9, the stats emphasize that even the base model R1S matches the top-performing EV9. Hence, Rivian clinches the victory in this category.

Range and Charging
Range plays a crucial role in the decision-making process for an electric vehicle, and both models offer commendable ranges. However, one emerges as the clear winner based on range alone.
The Kia EV9 Light RWD offers an EPA-estimated range of 230 miles, decent for city driving but may require an upgrade for longer journeys. Opting for the Light Long Range RWD increases the range to 304 miles, a significant improvement. The EV9 Wind and EV9 Land provide an EPA-estimated range of 280 miles each, while the EV9 GT-Line hits 270 miles. The top-tier EV9, the Light Long Range RWD, stands out with the longest range. Kia’s 800-volt architecture supports fast charging up to 350kW, offering swift recharging capabilities.
In contrast, the Rivian R1S shines with enhanced range capabilities. The base model R1S offers 270 miles of range, with the Large battery pack extending it to 330 miles and the Max battery pack pushing it to 410 miles. The tri-motor R1S boasts a range of 371 miles, while the quad-motor variant’s range is yet to be revealed. However, the R1S doesn’t charge as rapidly as the EV9, running on a 400V system with a charging speed of 220kW.
Although the EV9 excels in fast charging, the R1S’s extended range takes precedence in this comparison, underscoring its advantage over the EV9.

Pricing and Availability
While Rivian emerges as the superior performer, it also comes with a higher price tag. The Kia EV9 garners praise for offering notable features at a competitive price point. The EV9 starts at $54,900, providing good value for its offerings. For enhanced range, the EV9 Light Long Range RWD is priced at $59,200, with models climbing up to the EV9 GT-Line AWD starting at $73,900.
Conversely, the Rivian R1S commands a premium over the Kia EV9. The base R1S model, the R1S Adventure Dual Standard, surpasses the most expensive EV9 at $75,900. The lineup extends up to the Tri Max version at $105,900, with the quad-motor variant expected to set a new price record once it’s launched.
Winner: Kia EV9
Overall Winner: Rivian R1S
It’s no surprise that the Rivian R1S emerges as the overall winner. Positioned as a luxury offering, the R1S justify its higher price tag with a superior design, performance, and range. The R1S appeals to those seeking a modern and high-performing electric SUV. While the Kia EV9 makes a solid contender, especially for budget-conscious buyers, it doesn’t quite match the R1S in terms of key metrics. The R1S delivers a more comprehensive package, making it the preferred choice for those willing to invest in a top-tier electric SUV. However, the Kia EV9 remains an excellent alternative, providing ample features and value for its price point.
