Cyan’s iconic PC adventure game Riven: The Sequel to Myst is set to receive a remake using Unreal Engine 5 later this year. Confirmed by Cyan to Digital Trends, the Riven remake will not utilize any “AI-assisted content.”
Riven: The Sequel to Myst was released in 1997 as a follow-up to the groundbreaking puzzle and immersive 3D game Myst. Following the success of remaking Myst for PC and VR, Cyan announced the remake of Riven in 2022. The revamped version will showcase Unreal Engine 5 graphics, free movement gameplay in 3D environments, and additional puzzle and narrative content, all without AI assistance.
Cyan faced controversy last year with the use of “AI-assisted content” in their crowdfunded game Firmament. This led to backlash from backers who were unaware of the AI involvement in the game’s development. The Firmament credits suggested AI was used for voice acting and written content, prompting Cyan to clarify the extent of AI usage on Twitter.
For the Riven remake, Cyan has assured that no AI-assisted content will be utilized. With the original game as a foundation, the developers aim to avoid any AI-related controversies that may cause concern among fans.
Riven is scheduled for release on PC, VR, and other platforms in 2024.
