Two of Tencent’s leading studios, TiMi and Lightspeed, are currently working on their own interpretation of Palworld following the tremendous success of the game developed by Pocket Pair.
As reported by Bloomberg, insiders familiar with the situation revealed that these two Tencent studios are developing mobile games in the style of Palworld. This suggests that the games will likely incorporate elements such as survival, crafting, stylized violence, and forming alliances with a variety of creatures.
Both teams operate as independent studios within Tencent, and it seems they independently arrived at the idea of creating a Palworld-like game simultaneously.
Earlier this year, Palworld reached global phenomenon status, achieving over 20 million sales in a month and becoming the biggest third-party launch in the history of Xbox Game Pass.
Tencent is actively pursuing the next major success comparable to the enduring popularity of Honor of Kings, Tencent’s MOBA released in 2015 that continues to thrive – with plans for another launch in the Western market this year.
By the end of 2023, Honor of Kings was the second highest-grossing mobile title, trailing only behind the multi-billion dollar success of Monopoly GO.
Striving for Success
This development of new mobile games by Tencent aligns with the company’s strategy of focusing on proprietary IPs, as evidenced by the reported reassignment of hundreds of employees from Assassin’s Creed Jade to concentrate on the in-house party game DreamStar – Tencent’s response to NetEase’s popular UGC-powered party game, Eggy Party.
The addition of two more internally developed games to Tencent’s portfolio reflects its commitment to making significant investments in games that build upon successful IPs or leverage proven gameplay mechanics within specific niches.
