Samsung is set to introduce exciting new health features to its smartwatches. An APK teardown by Android Authority indicates that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra may include an AGEs index, continuous glucose monitoring, and family health tracking.
Here’s a breakdown of these potential features:
AGEs Index
The AGEs index provides an overview of metabolic health and the aging process by measuring compounds that accumulate as individuals age. This feature allows the Galaxy Watch to measure the production of AGEs compounds in the body when protein and fat molecules are oxidized by sugar molecules.
According to Diagnoptics, the company behind this feature, “AGEs play a pivotal role in the development of chronic age-related diseases such as diabetes, renal failure, and cardiovascular disease.”
The measurement of AGEs can help predict the risk of diabetes, heart attack, and stroke, providing insight into overall wellness. This noninvasive method is made possible by the characteristic fluorescence of AGEs, allowing Samsung to incorporate the feature into a smartwatch. It’s uncertain if older devices will receive this feature.
Continuous Glucose Monitoring
The Galaxy Watch 7 may also offer continuous glucose monitoring, as indicated by the APK teardown. While the feature is visible on the UI screen, no data is populated yet. This aligns with earlier rumors from Bloomberg about non-invasive blood glucose monitoring potentially becoming available within the next five years.
The challenge for Samsung lies in accurately estimating glucose levels without invasive methods, such as pricking the skin with a needle for blood samples.
Family Health Tracking
The latest Samsung Health app suggests that family health tracking could be on the horizon for Galaxy Watches. This feature would allow users to monitor the health data of family members, including children, with detailed statistics displayed on the app.
Privacy concerns are addressed through built-in security measures, allowing family members to control the sharing of their health data. Guardians must provide consent to access a child’s health information, ensuring data privacy and protection.
This feature is expected to be available on older smartwatches, suggesting compatibility across various Samsung devices.
