Pokémon Go is going all out in its upcoming update by transforming its adorable creatures into massive monsters through the Dynamax mechanic.
Previously exclusive to the 2019 Nintendo Switch titles Pokémon Sword and Shield, Dynamax brings a whole new level of excitement to the game with larger Pokémon, powerful attacks, and epic battles.
Although Go initially overlooked this feature and many of Sword and Shield’s new Pokémon, it later introduced Pokémon from subsequent Switch titles like Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, and Violet. This decision resulted in Go offering more Pokémon species than any main series game, but it left a 2019-shaped gap in its catalog, which Niantic plans to fill now.
Go goes giga-sized
The latest season of Pokémon Go, titled “Max Out,” kicks off on September 3rd, encouraging players to experience the game in a bigger and wilder way.
Fan-favorites from Sword and Shield, including Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble, will make their debut, along with the version mascots Zacian and Zamazenta – Legendary Pokémon representing sword and shield themes.
In the recent trailer, classic Pokémon like Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise were shown to become gigantic through the Dynamax mechanic, powered by Max Particles and Power Spots.
Since Pokémon Go is a location-based game, players will need to discover these Power Spots in the real world using their in-game maps to find Dynamax Pokémon.
Players will have the opportunity to participate in Go’s first-ever Max Battles, elevating combat to new heights shortly after the intense tournament at Worlds.
The Pokémon Go team announced, “Breaking news: Dynamax Pokémon are appearing in Pokémon Go! Reports indicate that they are showing up at mysterious Power Spots discovered worldwide. Team up with your friends to take on new Max Battles, capture these powerful Pokémon, and harness the energy of newly discovered Max Particles.”
As Sword and Shield drew inspiration from the United Kingdom, Pokémon Go rewards residents with an exclusive spawn of Stonjourner, a rock-like creature based on Stonehenge, showcasing the game’s unique geo-based gameplay.
Amid the trend of mobile game developers pushing for web shop purchases over in-game transactions, Niantic is also hoping to drive players towards its online store. An exclusive Max Particle bundle designed to provide an early advantage with the Dynamax mechanic will be available for purchase.
