PlayStation unveiled the latest addition to its lineup, the PlayStation 5 Pro. This new console is an upgraded version of the base PS5, designed to prioritize both graphics and higher frame rates simultaneously. The PS5 Pro boasts several enhancements, including a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI-powered upscaling. Scheduled to launch on November 7 for $700, pre-orders for the PS5 Pro open on September 26.
The lead architect of the PS5, Mark Cerny, introduced the new console along with its innovative features. Cerny highlights that the improved GPU offers 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory, resulting in 45% faster rendering for gameplay. The advanced ray tracing capabilities enable dynamic reflections and light refractions. Furthermore, the AI-driven upscaling, known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, utilizes machine learning to enhance detail and clarity.
Cerny revealed that players overwhelmingly prefer Performance mode over Fidelity mode when given the choice, leading to the PS5 Pro’s focus on bridging the gap between the two modes while maintaining high frame rates. According to CEO Hideaki Nishino of Sony Interactive Entertainment, various PS5 games will be updated to leverage the PS5 Pro’s features, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
Nishino mentioned in a follow-up blog post that the PS5 Pro is the same size as the PS5 but lacks a disc drive (which can be purchased separately). It is compatible with all PS5 accessories, including PSVR2, PlayStation Portal, and the DualSense Edge. Additionally, players have the option to customize console covers when new designs become available.
