Blizzard Entertainment is considering testing a 6v6 format in Overwatch 2 following its initial removal, although no final decision has been made yet.
In a lengthy blog post totaling around 3,600 words, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller revealed that the team is exploring the possibility of introducing a series of events to test new “composition formats,” including 6v6, based on player feedback.
Keller stated, “The community has expressed interest in testing various forms of 6v6 gameplay, and we are looking into ways to implement these tests based on your feedback.”
While the decision to bring back 6v6 is complex due to the game being built for 5v5, Keller reassured players that the team is working on potentially reintroducing the format if the tests show positive results.
Several changes were made in transitioning from the original Overwatch to Overwatch 2, one of the most significant being the shift from 6v6 to 5v5 PVP. The move aimed to reduce queue times and provide a more balanced gameplay experience.
Despite the benefits of 5v5, some players criticized the change for reducing match variety and overall gameplay enjoyment. Keller acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the team’s commitment to preserving the core gameplay experience while exploring new formats like 6v6.
