Nintendo has filed two new lawsuits, as reported on Tuesday. One lawsuit is against the owner of a company that allegedly sold modded Switches, while the other involves the moderator of a subreddit where users could learn how to play pirated games.
According to TorrentFreak, Nintendo is suing Modded Hardware and its owner, Ryan “Homebrew Homie” Daly, for selling mod chips, modded Switch consoles, and a memory card that enables playing pirated games. Nintendo’s lawsuit claims substantial harm to the company and seeks damages for copyright infringement and trafficking in circumvention devices.
The lawsuit states that Nintendo had previously warned Daly about his activities but he continued despite the warnings.
The second lawsuit is against James Williams, known as Archbox, who Nintendo alleges is connected to pirate shops selling pirated Nintendo Switch games. Williams is also a moderator of r/SwitchPirates where he allegedly provided advice on playing illegal game copies.
In response to the lawsuit, subreddit moderator Vhirsion issued a statement emphasizing that the community does not support piracy and operates under the assumption that all content shared is legal.
In previous cases, Nintendo has successfully taken legal action against entities involved in piracy, such as the $2.4 million lawsuit against Switch emulator maker Yuzu and the arrest of a Team Xecuter member for selling hacking hardware.
