Aspyr, a remaster and port studio, has collaborated with Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics to announce the release of another trilogy remaster. This trilogy will include entries from the second trilogy, featuring titles like The Angel of Darkness.
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, announced on Friday, will revamp The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and The Angel of Darkness. These titles will receive various upgrades, including enhanced graphics, the option to switch between classic and modern control schemes, and over 150 new trophies for achievement seekers. Additionally, the photo mode from Tomb Raider I-III Remastered will be included, along with boss health bars for players.
This trilogy marked a unique period in the franchise’s history. Core Design, the original developers of Tomb Raider, were tasked by publisher Eidos Interactive to release a new game annually after the success of the original. The burnout led to attempts to kill off Lara Croft, with The Last Revelation depicting her demise, yet the series continued. The subsequent release of Chronicles and the underperformance of The Angel of Darkness highlighted the need for a series reboot.
Despite technical challenges and Core Design’s exhaustion with the yearly release schedule, The Angel of Darkness proved to be a commercial success. Its reception, however, indicated the necessity for a fresh start for the franchise.
Players can revisit this era of Tomb Raider by playing the remastered trilogy on February 14, 2025, available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC at a price of $30.
