Produced alongside our friends at PocketGamer.fun – THE place to discover your next favourite mobile games – here’s our pick of the best fresh-this-week titles.
While the deals and the stats of the gaming world are important, nothing would happen without the research, funding and, of course, development that goes into making a great game. PocketGamer.fun brings you latest games, lets you see them in action and download right from the page.
So here are the most exciting new mobile games right now, the developers and publishers behind them, and why, exactly, they’ve made the cut.
Spirit of the Island
Life-sim RPG Spirit of the Island has finally migrated to mobile two years after its console and PC release, bringing a truckload of tropical islands along for the ride. Bursting with charming, colourful visuals and in no short supply of activities, this is a game all about living life to the fullest… with an essential sprinkling of efficient time management.
Whether it’s farming, mining, fishing, foraging, or even socialising, Spirit of the Island is a sandbox in the truest sense – empowering players to make the most of their in-game days and realise some all-important self-discoveries.
Of course, rebuilding a luscious archipelago is in the best interest of the locals too; fancy shops and striking landmarks can mean big business for the economy, and tourism’s bound to boom in a delightful tropical paradise complete with 14 unique islands. 1M Bits Horde even developed a multiplayer side to Spirit of the Island, because what could be better than treasure hunting with friends?
Heian City Story
Bringing a historical twist to the city-builder genre, Heian City Story is a retro-style sprite-based game set in a Japanese town sometime between 794 and 1185: the Heian period, considered by many as the age when Japan’s national culture was able to mature. What better time to set a game all about development and expansion?
Heian City Story sees players manage everything from teahouses to temples, building up an ancient town from scratch and keeping those pixelated locals happy all the while. There’s also morale to monitor, boosted through horse racing, sumo wrestling, poetry and other activities. And, of course, there are city walls to defend from the nightmarish bunny warriors.
Japanese studio Kairosoft first released Heian City Story in Japan this April. Three months later and it’s expanded to the West as a fully fledged premium game, following in the pixelated footsteps of forebears High Sea Saga DX, Magazine Mogul, Zoo Park Story and others.
Subway Surfers City
Sybo Games has stealth-dropped a sequel to its mega-hit Subway Surfers, soft launching Subway Surfers City in select regions on iOS and Android. The new game features multiple returning characters and iterates on the classic endless runner gameplay – giving series fans even more to run and jump about.
Subway Surfers City also boasts revamped graphics, new obstacles, brand-new missions and adventures, and even a hoverboard. But exploring Subway City isn’t all fun and games – players must strive to constantly stay one step ahead of Guard the Dog and earn as much XP as possible to unlock even more areas.
Every character and board has its own unique power-ups too, whether that’s a bouncy shield or coin magnet, with upgrades providing an all-important sense of progression to the endless experience.
Lego Play
Lego Systems A/S’s new creative app Lego Play is designed for brick lovers of all kinds by providing a child-friendly environment to design, build, watch videos, and even play games in. Expressing creativity is key, with Lego Systems promoting users to share their inventions with the in-app community.
Uploaded photos can be decorated with colourful stickers and doodles, and hashtags can help get posts trending in a pseudo social media fashion. But keeping child security at the forefront, all posts are ensured to be Lego-based and safe for even the youngest brick builders to consume.
In-app videos aim to inspire new creations too, while minigames like Lil Wing and Lil Worm offer instant entertainment for those Lego fans looking for a break from all the inventing.
Royal Card Clash
Mobile and card games often go hand in hand, and Royal Card Clash is no exception. A reimagining of Solitaire, this is a title infused with HP, damage points, and mathematical deck-based combat, taking a classic game and turning it suitably mobile.
The aim of the single-player campaign is simple enough: to take down highfalutin nobility with a strong deck of cards. But strategy is key, with a range of difficulty levels upping that challenge until players are prepared to face each other in the global leaderboards – competing to use the best cards efficiently and get the furthest possible on one solid deck.
Royal Card Clash is the latest project from Gearhead Games and is an intentional departure from racing game Retro Drivers and platformer Scrap Divers. It was designed to be “totally different” to those previous projects, and can even be played ad-free for the price of a one-time fee.
