Overwatch saw great success as an esports title, but its success began to fade with the launch of Overwatch 2. The Overwatch League became outdated compared to its competition and closed in 2023. However, Blizzard has just announced their plans for the new Overwatch esports format, promising something new and open. The new format aims to embrace a new openness and cater to all potential players, just like the game going free to play.
New Overwatch Esports Format Announced
Blizzard has announced a brand new format for competitive Overwatch called the Overwatch Champions Series. The new esports format will operate globally, divided into key regions: North America, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. Each region will have multi-stage tournaments.
New Format – Overwatch Champion Series
Blizzard has outlined the new Overwatch esports format, starting with a 9-round qualifier event in the NA/EMEA regional tournament. The events, including a Swiss stage, groups, and the Main Event, will work differently from the previous franchise-based system.
Blizzard Partners with FACEIT for New Overwatch Esports Format
Blizzard has partnered with FACEIT to organize the new competitive system for Overwatch. FACEIT will provide an open ecosystem for all players to connect and participate in events, bringing together both top players and rising talent.
Live Events Partnering with DreamHack
The new Overwatch Majors will be part of DreamHack, known for hosting some of the biggest gaming events. The OWCS will conclude at DreamHack Stockholm, crowning the new Overwatch champions.
