The Run: Got Next is an exciting new street basketball game created by former EA developers who have previously worked on popular series such as NBA Street, Madden, and Dead Space.
The game is developed by Play by Play Studios, founded by former Visceral Games General Manager Scott Probst and Madden creative director Mike Young. In a blog post by Probst, the studio expresses their commitment to creating a sports game experience that focuses on fun without the complexities of simulations and microtransactions. “We’re going to double down on the fun and get you into the game, and we’re gonna do it with style,” writes Probst.
The Run: Got Next is the studio’s first venture into this genre of sports games and is described as a spiritual successor to games like NBA Street. It is an online 3v3 basketball game with roguelike elements where players embark on street games around the world in a quest for victory. Players can construct teams with unique playstyles and compete against other players in basketball matches.
Play by Play has confirmed that The Run: Got Next will be fully online at launch, with the option for solo play as well. Players can enhance their gameplay by purchasing upgrades in a roguelike fashion from a store between matches. The success of games like Tape to Tape has shown promise in the sports roguelike genre, and this game aims to bring a fresh perspective to street basketball.
July has been an exciting month for sports games, with the highly anticipated release of EA Sports College Football 25. While The Run: Got Next has a more animated style compared to games like NBA 2K24, it caters to a segment of basketball game fans who have been longing for a different gaming experience.
The Run: Got Next is set to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.
