Cyan Worlds announced today that a remake of Riven: The Sequel to Myst is coming out later this year in both VR and flatscreen versions.
Riven first released for PC in 1997. As its old subtitle makes clear, it’s a sequel to the iconic graphic adventure game Myst. Cyan released a remake of Myst in 2020.
The studio is using Unreal Engine 5 to recreate Riven from the ground up. This new version will allow players to explore its worlds with free movement. Although I have to admit, I find the point-and-click traversal of the original somewhat charming. But then again, I am old.
Riven is the second part of a series that would eventually take place over five games (not counting the 2003 MMO spinoff Uru: Ages Beyond Myst). I have a particular fondness for Myst III: Exile, so here’s hoping that it’ll also get the remake treatment.
